Interesting Facts About Norcross

Cotton Seed Man: The Old Cotton Gin on Lawrenceville Street was owned by the Summerour family, and in the early 1900s, Homer Summerour developed a highly productive cotton variety called “Half and Half.” He became so well-known that people from across the country could send an order addressed to “Cotton Seed Man” and “Georgia,” and it would reach him in Norcross.

Pitch Tree Road: Thrasher Park on N. Peachtree Street marks the path of the Eastern Continental Divide, which once separated the territories of the Creek and Cherokee tribes. This ridge had a trading path called “Pitch Tree Road” because Native Americans used pitch from local pine trees to seal their canoes. Over time, this path was widened by William Nesbit and is now lined with Victorian homes and beautiful oak trees.

The “NorX“: The first car manufactured south of the Mason-Dixon Line was produced in Norcross. Known as the NorX, it was built by a company owned by Edward Buchanan, a Norcross native who achieved success on Wall Street. The car was mainly sold to Mr. Buchanan’s friends in upstate New York, and the company disappeared along with his financial downfall.

Atlanta’s Summer Resort: Norcross earned the nickname “Atlanta’s Summer Resort” in the late 1800s. A commuter train called the “Airline Belle” transported visitors from Atlanta to escape the summer heat, while also carrying Norcross residents to the city for work and school. Visitors could camp by the Chattahoochee River or stay at one of the town’s three hotels, such as the Brunswick Hotel known for its rockers on the porches.

The Norcross Nuggets: The town’s original baseball field was located on College Street, where the Norcross Nuggets would compete against other teams. Surprisingly, Norcross produced more professional baseball players per capita than any other town in the nation. Notably, Roy Carlyle hit a Guinness World Record home run measuring 618 feet. The old baseball field was recently transformed into Lillian Webb Park, honoring Mayor Emeritus Lillian Webb and offering green spaces and recreational opportunities.
